Great British Energy opens permanent headquarters in Aberdeen

Great British Energy has officially opened its permanent headquarters at 2 Marischal Square in Aberdeen. The move aims to leverage the city’s established energy expertise to support corporate functions, supply-chain activities, and deep-water offshore wind development projects.

To support the regional workforce, the publicly owned company has entered into a £750,000 partnership via a Memorandum of Understanding with the University of Aberdeen, North East Scotland College, Robert Gordon University, and the Energy Transition Zone Ltd. This initiative focuses on training young people and those transitioning into energy-adjacent sectors, with a goal of having 5% of the company’s workforce in entry-level or early-career pathways.

While Chief Executive Dan McGrail and Energy Secretary Miatta Fahnbulleh highlighted the move as a vital step for the UK’s energy future, the project has faced political scrutiny. Opposition MP Andrew Bowie criticized the scale of direct job creation, noting that earlier estimates of 1,000 roles have been revised, with current expectations of approximately 300 employees at the Aberdeen headquarters. The company maintains a broader target of supporting or creating over 10,000 jobs through its investments by 2030.
