Great British Grid announced to compete in UK electricity market

The UK government has announced the creation of Great British Grid (GB Grid), a publicly owned company designed to compete with private sector network operators to modernize the nation’s electricity infrastructure. Operating as a branch of Great British Energy, the new entity aims to accelerate construction, increase competition, and reduce energy costs for consumers by bidding for future transmission projects.

To address lengthy grid connection queues, the government is also introducing reforms that allow businesses and developers to build their own connections in certain circumstances, a move modeled after similar policies in Ireland. The initiative seeks to tackle delays that have previously seen projects waiting up to ten years for connections.

While the government intends for GB Grid to complement existing institutions like the National Energy System Operator and the regulator Ofgem, the plan has faced criticism. Some experts have labeled the initiative a “classic political distraction,” warning that it may fail to address underlying issues such as skilled labor shortages and supply chain constraints. Initial startup costs will be drawn from Great British Energy’s existing budget, which has approximately £4 billion remaining after allocations for other energy projects.
