Great Lakes Commission launches database to curb invasive species sales

The Great Lakes Commission has introduced the AquaSale database, an online tool designed to prevent the spread of invasive species through online commerce. The database compiles state and federal regulations regarding the sale, purchase, and transport of aquatic organisms across all 50 U.S. states.

The initiative aims to assist buyers and sellers in complying with varying regional laws, as many online retailers are reportedly unaware of the specific regulations governing aquatic species. The project is part of the Great Lakes Detector of Invasive Aquatics in Trade initiative and is maintained by the National Sea Grant Law Center. Funding for the project was provided by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service through the Great Lakes Restoration Initiative.
