Great Nicobar Island Project: Congress slams Centre's Supreme Court plea

Congress leader Jairam Ramesh has accused the Indian government of “bulldozing” the Rs 92,000-crore Great Nicobar Island project. Ramesh alleged that environmental and forest-related approvals for the project are deeply flawed and that impact assessment reports are of “dubious value.”

The controversy follows the Union government’s decision to approach the Supreme Court to seek a stay on proceedings currently pending in the Calcutta High Court. Five petitions filed by citizens and civil society groups are awaiting hearings in the High Court, including one regarding alleged violations of the Forest Rights Act, 2006, which impacts local tribal communities.

Ramesh described the government's move to the Supreme Court as an “astonishing U-turn,” noting that the government had previously agreed to a final hearing in the Calcutta High Court scheduled for November 25 and 26, 2026. The Supreme Court plea is expected to be heard around October 5, 2026.
