U.S. Central Plains and Wisconsin See Diminished Severe Weather Prospects

In late May, forecast models for the central United States showed an Omega‑block pattern with a strong jet stream displaced northward and multiple cold fronts stripping moisture from the Great Plains and Midwest. The lack of moisture was predicted to severely limit tornado development and reduce viable targets for storm chasers, prompting suggestions to cancel planned chase trips.

In late July, the Storm Prediction Center placed southeast Wisconsin, including Fond du Lac County, in an enhanced severe‑weather risk, expecting showers and thunderstorms that could alleviate a prolonged drought. A warm cap aloft, however, prevented rain formation, leaving the area still in drought conditions. Forecasters noted the possibility of afternoon storms if the cap weakens, but as of the latest model runs the anticipated rain had not materialised.
