Great Salt Lake receives 3 billion gallons of water from Willard Bay

Utah officials are releasing over 3 billion gallons of water from Willard Bay to the Great Salt Lake and its surrounding wetlands. This strategic transfer, totaling approximately 3.26 billion gallons, arrives during peak fall bird migration to support the ecosystem as the lake remains significantly below healthy levels.

The water was originally diverted from Pineview Reservoir and stored in Willard Bay during a construction project involving the replacement of a 6.4-mile transmission pipeline. The Great Salt Lake Commissioner's Office noted that the release will flow to the Willard Spur.

This effort follows a volatile water year in Utah characterized by record-low snowpack and early snowmelt, which contributed to severe fire seasons. Although summer monsoon rains provided significant precipitation in some areas and helped restore mountain soil moisture, statewide reservoir storage ended the water year at 45% capacity, a 14% decrease from the previous year.
