Great Salt Lake water levels reach critical lows in Utah
The Great Salt Lake in Utah is experiencing a critical decline in water levels, threatening an ecosystem that supports up to 12 million migratory birds annually. The shrinking of the lake is driven by several factors, including reduced snowpack, drought, rising temperatures, and heavy water consumption for agriculture and residential use.
As water levels drop, salinity increases, which disrupts the food chain by affecting the productivity of algae, brine shrimp, and brine flies—the primary food sources for the region's 300 bird species. The receding waters also alter essential habitats like shallow waters and mudflats used for feeding and resting during migration.
Beyond wildlife impacts, the receding lake exposes the lakebed, posing human health risks. The Congressional Research Service has noted that exposed sediments may contain toxic substances, and low water levels could negatively impact air quality.
