Great Sea Interconnector project nears implementation stage

The Great Sea Interconnector (GSI) project, an undersea electricity connection involving Cyprus, Greece, and potentially Israel, is reaching a critical implementation stage. Cypriot President Nikos Christodoulides stated that for the first time since the project's inception in 2012, there are substantial developments toward its execution, noting that the involvement of a French investment company has been decisive for both economic and geopolitical reasons.

In the Cypriot Parliament's Energy Committee, Minister of Energy Michalis Damianos discussed the necessity of conducting deep-sea research in the Aegean region to map the seabed and determine cable routes. To facilitate this, Greek authorities are expected to issue a NAVTEX in the coming weeks or within 2026.

While the project faces economic scrutiny, officials emphasized that geopolitical factors and Turkey's stance remain significant challenges. The project's progress is being coordinated closely between Cyprus and Greece, with ongoing discussions involving French and Egyptian diplomatic channels to ensure stability and implementation.
