Great Sea Interconnector project delayed to 2031
The Great Sea Interconnector (GSI) electricity link project between Cyprus and Greece has faced a new delay, with the expected commissioning date pushed back to January 1, 2031. Total costs for the project are now projected to exceed 1.9 billion euros.
According to Polivios Lemonaris, President of the Cyprus Energy Regulatory Authority (RAEK), 510 kilometers of the required 900 kilometers of submarine cable have completed factory production. The cables intended for deeper waters are currently undergoing underwater testing in the Sicily region.
Progress on seabed research remains incomplete, with 40 percent of the necessary surveys still pending. Lemonaris noted that the remaining research areas cover maritime zones that have drawn objections from Turkey. To date, 45 million euros have been spent on marine research for the project.
