Abeille Marengo arrives in Crete for Great Sea Interconnector surveys

The French research vessel Abeille Marengo arrived at the port of Heraklion, Crete, on Tuesday, October 27, following its departure from Naples, Italy. The vessel is tasked with conducting essential underwater surveys for the Great Sea Interconnector (GSI) project, a strategic initiative to establish an electrical interconnection between Greece and Cyprus.

The surveys, which aim to map the seabed and geological formations for the subsea cable, are being carried out by the Italian company Next Geosolutions Europe SpA on behalf of the French company Nexans. The project involves a subsea cable approximately 1,208 kilometers long, capable of transmitting 1,000 MW at 500 kV, reaching depths of up to 3,000 meters. The total estimated cost of the GSI project is approximately 1.9 billion euros, with the European Commission having approved a 680 million euro contribution.

Operations are currently on standby awaiting the issuance of a NAVTEX (navigational warning) to define the specific maritime area and schedule, which is expected in early November. Due to the project's location in the Eastern Mediterranean, strict security protocols are in place. The vessel must notify the Hellenic Navy's Hydrographic Service, Submarine Command, and Naval Air Force Command at least 72 hours before starting work and provide daily updates. Activities are expected to take place under the discrete supervision of the Hellenic Coast Guard and Navy units.
