Great Sea Interconnector faces Turkish maritime challenges

The Great Sea Interconnector (GSI), a major electricity interconnection project between Greece and Cyprus, is facing geopolitical tensions. MEP Nikolas Farantouris has submitted a formal inquiry to the European Commission following statements from the Turkish Ministry of National Defense. Turkey has asserted that it will not permit unauthorized cable laying or scientific research in maritime areas, citing boundary agreements with Libya and the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus.

Farantouris argues that these Turkish claims violate international law and the sovereign rights of Greece and Cyprus. He noted that the GSI is a project of common interest receiving 657 million euros in funding through the Connecting Europe Facility.

Separately, IPTO Chairman Manos Manousakis highlighted the project as a significant example of Greek-French cooperation. He noted a historic agreement with the French firm Meridiam and emphasized the role of Nexans in manufacturing the cables. The project, which Ursula von der Leyen has ranked as one of Europe's most important electricity corridors, aims to end Cyprus's energy isolation and facilitate the integration of renewable energy into the European market.
