Eastern German nature sites nominated for 2026 Nature Wonder award

Several natural sites in eastern Germany have been nominated for the ‘Naturwunder 2026’ (Nature Wonder 2026) award. The selection, made by the Heinz Sielmann Foundation and the German Hiking Association, includes nine distinct areas.

In Thuringia, the nominees are the Saalfelder Feengrotten, known for their colorful mineral formations, and the Alperstedter Ried moorland, which serves as a vital habitat for over 1,280 species. Saxony is represented by the Zittauer Steinzoo, featuring unique sandstone formations, while Saxony-Anhalt features the Teufelsmauer in the Harz region, a significant geological site providing refuge for various specialized plants and animals.
