Great Southern Mining and Gold Fields have reported promising geological results from maiden drilling at the Mt Dillon target in Queensland. The drilling program, located at Edinburgh Park, was designed to test a large-scale intrusive-related gold system (IRGS) approximately 100km south of Townsville.

The 1535-metre, two-hole program was fully funded under an earn-in agreement that allows Gold Fields to spend up to A$15 million for a 75 per cent stake in the project. Both diamond holes were extended beyond their original planned depths, reaching 762.1 metres and 772.8 metres respectively, after intersecting visual evidence of a potentially significant mineral-rich structure.

Core logging revealed a 60m to 80m-wide fault zone near the surface, followed by volcanic and intrusive rocks showing pervasive alteration and disseminated pyrite. Lower sections of the drill core contained hydrothermal breccia zones with pyrite content of up to five per cent. Confirmatory assays are expected in the coming weeks.
