Great Sphinx of Giza geological studies reveal new insights

The Great Sphinx of Giza remains a significant archaeological mystery due to a lack of ancient written records regarding its creator and exact construction date. Standing approximately 18 meters high and 73 meters long, the monument was carved from a single monolithic block of natural limestone on the Giza Plateau.

Geological studies of the plateau suggest the area was once a deep seabed a million years ago, resulting in layered limestone with varying hardness and erosion rates. Researchers are utilizing these geological structures and nearby temple ruins to better understand the monument's origins. Recent findings include the identification of a drainage channel marked by modern brickwork near the Sphinx's enclosure wall.
