Great Wall Motors eyes top‑five in Australia as BYD surges ahead
Chinese automaker BYD has accelerated its Australian sales, posting a 156.2% year‑on‑year increase in 2025 and a 131.5% jump in June 2026, delivering 18,881 vehicles and ranking second only to Toyota. The rapid growth was aided by a former federal fringe‑benefits‑tax exemption and an exclusive partnership with Eagers Automotive that expanded in 2025.
Great Wall Motors (GWM) recorded 6,104 deliveries in June 2026, an 11.7% rise, bringing its 2025 total to 52,809 units, slightly ahead of BYD’s 52,415. GWM COO John Kett praised BYD as “an amazing company” but affirmed GWM’s focus on its own targets, aiming for a top‑five Australian position by the end of 2027 and planning a six‑month product rollout to boost sales.
