Great Wall Museum reopens in Beijing after renovation
The Great Wall Museum, located at the foot of the Badaling section in Beijing's Yanqing District, has reopened to the public following extensive renovations and modernization. Originally inaugurated in 1994, the museum closed in April 2022 for redevelopment.
Renovation work began in December 2023, featuring a new building design intended to integrate the structure with the surrounding mountains and vegetation. The 16,000-square-meter facility includes exhibition areas, educational spaces, public services, collection storage, and research facilities.
The museum’s permanent exhibition features over 700 cultural artifacts, many on loan from various Chinese museums. The displays trace more than 2,000 years of construction history and detail the evolution of conservation methods. Additionally, the museum highlights the historical role of the Great Wall as both a military defense structure and a site for cultural exchange between ethnic groups.
