Great Western Highway detour faces traffic changes due to roadwork

Ongoing road improvement works on the Great Western Highway detour route are causing changed traffic conditions between Lithgow and Bell. While Victoria Pass remains closed to all traffic, work continues on Chifley Road through November 27, 2026, to strengthen the road surface.

Transport for NSW is conducting night work from 7pm to 5am, Sunday through Thursday, to minimize impact. To manage safety and prevent congestion on the steep incline of Scenic Hill, traffic may be held at the base of the hill for up to 20 minutes between September 20 and October 20.

Maintenance activities on Chifley Road include installing safety barriers, heavy patching, laying asphalt, and refreshing line markings. Motorists are advised to allow extra travel time due to shoulder and lane closures, intermittent stopping, and a reduced speed limit of 40 km/h.
