Great White Shark 'Marty' Tagged off Cape Cod in Stop & Shop Conservation Campaign
The Atlantic White Shark Conservancy identified a 10‑foot female great white shark as the first newly‑identified shark of the 2026 season off Cape Cod. Named “Marty” after Stop & Shop’s in‑store robot, she was tagged on July 16 with an acoustic transmitter that has pinged a receiver off North Truro 15 times, most recently on Aug 2. The tagging concludes a summer partnership with the grocery chain, which sold limited‑edition Shark Marty plush toys in Massachusetts and Rhode Island, directing 20 % of proceeds and a $10,000 commitment to the conservancy. Data from Marty’s tag is published on the free Sharktivity app and helps researchers study white‑shark behavior, movement and population dynamics, supporting public safety and long‑term conservation. Cynthia Wigren, CEO of the conservancy, and Roger Wheeler, president of Stop & Shop, said the campaign aims to spark curiosity and inspire regional interest in shark research.
