Greater Accra faces 15-hour power outage for emergency repairs

Parts of the Greater Accra Region and Ashaiman will experience a power outage of approximately 14 to 15 hours on Sunday, 16 August 2026. The interruption is scheduled from 03:30 to 18:00 local time to facilitate emergency repairs by the Ghana Grid Company Limited (GRIDCo).

The outage is necessary to replace a damaged steel lattice tower on the 161kV Tema-Achimota transmission line. The damage was caused by a fuel tanker explosion that occurred during welding work within the transmission line’s protected Right-of-Way (ROW) at Ashaiman Middle East.

Major districts affected include Accra East and Accra West, with specific areas such as Osu Oxford Street, Nima, James Town, Kaneshie, Cantonments, and Madina expected to lose power. The Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) has notified customers that multiple feeders will be switched off to allow GRIDCo engineers to dismantle and replace the structure to restore the safety and reliability of the corridor.
