Greater Anglia announces major rail upgrades and station redevelopment

Greater Anglia has announced significant infrastructure upgrades and redevelopment projects affecting rail services in the East of England.

Witham station will undergo a major transformation starting in September to improve accessibility and facilities. The project includes a new two-storey station building, a modern entrance on Easton Road, a relocated ticket office, and the installation of automatic ticket gates. Environmental upgrades such as solar panels and new lighting are also planned, alongside 200 new cycle spaces and new retail units. Due to the construction, car parking at Witham will be reduced from September 7 until the end of 2027, with alternative parking available at Hatfield Peverel and Beaulieu Park stations.

Additionally, essential maintenance and renewal work is scheduled across Suffolk and Norfolk throughout September and October. Engineering teams will work on the Great Eastern Main Line between Norwich and Ipswich, the East Suffolk Line, and the Felixstowe branch line. Key tasks include replacing 1.5km of aging rail between Stowmarket and Diss, upgrading a level crossing near Great Moulton, and performing extensive points maintenance around Ipswich station. Some services will be suspended during these weekends, with replacement bus services provided on affected routes.
