Greater Bay Area and major Chinese cities see summer tourism surge
The Greater Bay Area (GBA) is experiencing a significant surge in summer tourism and consumer spending. Online travel transaction volumes in Guangdong account for 10.06% of China's total, leading the nation. This growth is driven by diverse travel trends, including family trips, graduation travel, and cross-border tourism between mainland China, Hong Kong, and Macau.
In major urban hubs, inbound tourism is also seeing a robust recovery. In Shanghai, departure tax refund applications nearly tripled in the first half of the year, with refund amounts reaching 2.3 billion yuan. Foreign tourist spending via Alipay increased by 59.2% since July 1, reflecting improved payment accessibility and optimized tax policies.
Shenzhen has reported record-breaking passenger flows at several ports. At Shenzhen Airport, the number of inbound foreigners rose 24.5% during the summer, with visa-free arrivals accounting for 61% of that figure. The combination of streamlined customs processes, diverse payment options, and popular cultural landmarks is driving increased retail and hospitality activity across these regions.
