Greater Chennai Corporation extends property tax drive to July 31

The Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) has prolonged its special property‑tax collection campaign until 31 July after roughly half of the city’s property owners have not yet paid. Out of 14.23 lakh assessed properties, only 6.98 lakh owners have settled their dues, leaving about 7.25 lakh owners with outstanding tax.

The collection camps, which began on 3 July and were slated to end on 17 July, will now operate across all 15 zones of Chennai until the end of the month. GCC officials said the extension aims to boost revenue, which averages around Rs 1,800 crore annually and funds services such as solid‑waste management, road upkeep, street lighting, storm‑water drainage and park maintenance. Between 3 July and 15 July the camps generated roughly Rs 96 crore.

Residents are urged to clear their dues before the new deadline to avoid penal interest. Payments can be made online via the corporation’s portal or at any of the special collection camps.
