Greater Chennai Corporation launches new veterinary facility and waste drive

The Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) has launched two major urban management initiatives in Chennai.

A new dog sterilization centre and veterinary hospital has opened in Nandambakkam, Alandur Zone. Built at a cost of Rs 7.87 crore, the facility includes two operation theatres, a pharmacy, a laboratory, and recovery rooms. This expansion is part of a strategy to control the stray dog population and prevent rabies. The GCC currently performs approximately 200 surgeries daily and aims to increase this capacity to between 350 and 400 surgeries per day as additional facilities under construction are completed.

Simultaneously, the GCC has initiated a 40-day ‘Segregate Waste - Save Tomorrow’ campaign. This pilot program targets 50,000 households across five zones in south Chennai to encourage door-to-door waste segregation at the source. Officials are distributing dedicated bags for non-biodegradable waste and educating residents on separating biodegradable, sanitary, and hazardous materials. The campaign seeks to establish long-term behavioral changes in waste management, with potential expansion to other regions based on the results of this phase.
