Greater Manchester announces £60m pothole repair fund

Greater Manchester Mayor Bev Craig has announced a £60 million Pothole Fund aimed at repairing approximately 125km of highway and over one million square metres of road surface across the city-region. The investment is intended to improve the safety and reliability of the network for motorists, bus users, tram passengers, and cyclists.

The funds will be distributed among the ten Greater Manchester councils based on an agreed formula of need. Stockport Council is set to receive £6.82 million from the fund following lobbying efforts by the local Liberal Democrat administration.

Local officials noted that factors such as heavy vehicle traffic and harsh weather conditions have contributed to the deterioration of the roads. The investment represents a significant sum, exceeding the collective annual budget local authorities typically receive from the government for road and pavement maintenance.
