Greater Manchester rail upgrades and A555 flood works cause travel disruptions

Network Rail is carrying out major rail upgrades in Greater Manchester between 8 and 16 August. Engineers will replace a key junction near Guide Bridge on the weekends of 8‑9 August and 15‑16 August, suspending services on the Glossop, Hadfield and Rose Hill Marple lines into Manchester Piccadilly. A separate project will close the Manchester Victoria‑Rochdale line from 10 August until the morning of 15 August, with replacement bus services operating throughout the closure. Senior sponsor Lorna Samways thanked passengers for their patience as the works aim to improve reliability for passenger and freight services.

Separately, the council overseeing the A555 road linking Stockport and Manchester Airport has unveiled a new flood‑mitigation plan. Repeated flooding during intense rainfall has forced the road to close in the past. The latest proposal calls for upgrading the pumping infrastructure at Hall Moss Lane, replacing existing pumps and increasing capacity to handle extreme runoff. Work is scheduled to begin later this year, aiming to prevent future closures and improve drainage around Woodford and the Highfield Parkway estate.
