Greater Melbourne Soccer Association disputes Football Victoria rules with ACCC

The Greater Melbourne Soccer Association (GMSA) has escalated a dispute with Football Victoria to the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC). The association alleges that upcoming regulatory changes could lead to increased fees for families and a loss of independence for community soccer clubs.

Under proposed rules set for next year, clubs affiliated with Football Victoria would require written permission to participate in external competitions if Football Victoria offers a similar league. The GMSA, which represents approximately 2,500 players, fears that clubs could face deregistration if they do not comply, effectively forcing them into more expensive Football Victoria-sanctioned competitions.

Andrew Ellis, president of the GMSA, stated that the restrictions could impact the affordability and diversity of the sport. The association has engaged the law firm Lander and Rogers to challenge the restrictions, citing potential breaches of the Competition and Consumer Act regarding exclusive dealing and the misuse of market power.
