Greater Vancouver Zoo names new zebra foal Zuri

The Greater Vancouver Zoo has officially named its new zebra foal Zuri. The name was revealed during a special event on August 20, following a vote by approximately 1,500 social media followers who chose from several options, including Zahra, Savanna, Kalahari, and Sirocco.

Zuri was born on May 31 to a resident zebra named Sahara. At birth, the foal weighed 37 kilograms. For the first few months of her life, Zuri has been raised primarily by Sahara, while her father, Karoo, was kept in a nearby enclosure to allow the mother and foal to bond. Karoo was introduced to the zoo two years ago to assist in maintaining a sustainable zebra population.

Menita Prasad, the director of animal care, stated that the zoo intends to reintroduce Karoo to the family in the short term. The zoo noted that maintaining zebras in their collection is part of an ongoing effort to share important conservation messages with visitors.
