Greater Victoria residents advised to prepare for rising sea levels

Coastal communities around Greater Victoria and parts of British Columbia are being advised to prepare for higher-than-normal sea levels expected later this month. The elevation is linked to a Kelvin wave, a large movement of ocean water associated with El Niño conditions in the Pacific.

While significant impacts are not currently anticipated, the elevated water levels may exacerbate the effects of high tides, storm surges, and coastal flooding. PreparedBC is recommending that residents near the coast review emergency plans, prepare grab-and-go bags, and identify local evacuation routes and higher ground.

Coastal areas around Vancouver Island remain particularly vulnerable if high water levels coincide with adverse weather conditions. Residents are encouraged to monitor local weather forecasts, tide conditions, and official updates as the phenomenon moves along the West Coast.
