Greater Victoria residents urged to secure food attractants to prevent bear conflicts
The Wild Wise Society is urging residents of Greater Victoria to secure potential food sources to prevent bear conflicts. As bears prepare for winter, they enter a state known as hyperphagia, during which they may consume more than 20,000 calories per day to build fat reserves.
To minimize the risk of bears entering neighborhoods, the society recommends several preventative measures: storing garbage in secure containers, removing bird feeders until spring, securing pet food and compost, cleaning and securing barbecues, and promptly picking or cleaning up fallen fruit.
Wild Wise warns that bears accustomed to human-provided food can become persistent, potentially leading to property damage or dangerous encounters. Such behaviors may result in a bear being classified as a public safety risk and potentially being destroyed.
