Greece Independent Authority for Public Revenue notifies 55,000 retirees over undeclared pension arrears

The Independent Authority for Public Revenue (AADE) is issuing notifications to approximately 55,000 retirees who failed to declare retroactive pension payments received in 2020. Following targeted electronic cross-checks, the tax authority identified these discrepancies to prevent the cases from being statute-barred at the end of the year.

Of the roughly 878,000 taxpayers who received retroactive payments in 2020, approximately 87% (761,000 individuals) had already submitted the necessary income tax declarations. For the remaining taxpayers, the estimated additional tax burden is at least 100 euros per person. Early responses indicate that about three in ten notified individuals have already submitted amended declarations and paid the resulting tax.

To resolve these outstanding issues, AADE plans to issue further electronic reminders and conduct telephone communications. Taxpayers must submit amended declarations electronically through the AADE platform, selecting the specific tax year to which the retroactive income pertains rather than the year of receipt. For those unable to pay the full amount at once, the authority offers the option to settle the debt in up to 72 monthly installments, with a minimum monthly payment of 30 euros.
