Greece addresses agricultural challenges and Mediterranean Diet development

Giannis Andrianos, the Deputy Minister of Rural Development and Food, has highlighted the critical challenges and developmental opportunities facing the Greek agricultural sector. Speaking at the Olympia Forum VII, Andrianos noted that producers are currently navigating a demanding environment shaped by climate change, rising production costs, supply chain pressures, international competition, and zoonotic diseases.

To ensure long-term sustainability, the Ministry emphasizes the need for reduced production costs, improved water and energy management, and the integration of modern technologies. Andrianos also stressed the importance of producer organizations to increase bargaining power and access to markets, noting that supporting agricultural income is essential to making the profession attractive to younger generations in regional areas.

Additionally, during the 16th Intergovernmental Meeting of the Mediterranean Diet Emblematic Communities in Koroni, Andrianos discussed the Mediterranean Diet as both a UNESCO-recognized cultural heritage and a driver for sustainable rural development. He advocated for a strategic connection between agricultural production, food processing, gastronomy, and tourism to create higher added value for local economies and protect biodiversity.
