Greece addresses Gaza peace and Libya stability at UN Security Council

During UN Security Council sessions, Greece's Permanent Representative to the UN, Ambassador Aglaia Baltas, addressed critical issues regarding the Middle East and Libya.

Regarding the Palestinian situation, Baltas emphasized that a ceasefire in Gaza must lead to lasting peace and advocated for the two-state solution as the only viable path for coexistence. She called for large-scale humanitarian aid and the disarmament of Hamas and other armed groups. Reports noted that since October 2025, Israeli military operations have resulted in approximately 1,500 Palestinian deaths, including over 320 children, while the majority of Gaza's 2.1 million residents require shelter assistance.

On Libya, Baltas called for the withdrawal of foreign forces and respect for international law, specifically the Law of the Sea. She supported the UN-led political process to promote presidential and parliamentary elections within two years under a unified executive authority. Baltas also highlighted the importance of regional stability, good neighborly relations, and cooperation to combat human trafficking and irregular migration.
