Greece adds more than 1 GW of battery storage to its power grid

The Greek electricity system is set to receive roughly 1.2 GW of new battery storage capacity. The first portfolio, comprising about 700 MW, was approved through the initial two auctions and must become operational by 30 June under the Recovery and Resilience Fund’s terms. An additional 500 MW will be commissioned shortly, bringing total installed storage to around 1.19 GW.

Further projects are forthcoming, including a 330 MW unit from the Metlen‑Karatzi consortium in Thessaly and a 162 MW installation by HRON, a subsidiary of GEK TERNA, in Boeotia. These plants will operate directly in the market, generating guaranteed revenues while contributing to grid stability and mitigating excess solar generation.

The rollout marks Greece’s first large‑scale electricity‑storage “reservoir,” a milestone for the country’s transition to a more flexible, renewable‑heavy energy mix.
