Greece moves to implement EU AI Act with new national framework

The European Union's AI Act is being transposed into Greek law. A draft bill is under discussion in the parliamentary committee since early July, aiming to apply a risk‑based approach to artificial‑intelligence systems. High‑risk AI applications that affect health, safety or fundamental rights will face strict reliability, transparency and human‑oversight requirements, while practices such as social scoring are outright banned.

The framework introduces an "AI Regulatory Sandbox" to let startups and SMEs test innovative solutions under state supervision before market launch. It also proposes the Data Protection Authority as the central supervisory body, a Coordination Centre for AI expertise, and a public registry of AI systems used by public authorities. Digital Governance Minister Dimitris Papastergiou highlighted that the goal is to build citizens' trust while fostering innovation.

If enacted, the rules will require that users are informed when they interact with an AI system, such as a chatbot, and will impose administrative penalties for non‑compliance.
