Greece advances military capabilities with advanced missile systems and F-35 integration

Greece is undergoing significant military modernization through the acquisition of advanced aerial and missile systems. This includes the potential integration of the Barracuda-500M, a low-cost cruise missile developed by Anduril. The Barracuda-500M features a range exceeding 900 kilometers and a payload of approximately 45 kilograms, with an estimated unit cost of $200,000. Proponents suggest Greece should pursue domestic production partnerships with Anduril, similar to a recent agreement between Poland's Polska Grupa Zbrojeniowa and Anduril, to benefit the local defense industry.

Complementing these missile capabilities, Greece is enhancing its multi-layered defense structure. This involves the use of Israeli missile systems such as SPYDER, BARAK, and David’s Sling to cover various ranges, alongside the deployment of Rafale fighter jets and Belharra frigates. The acquisition of F-35A stealth fighters is also a central component of this strategy, providing deep-strike capabilities and advanced detection avoidance. Analysts note that these developments aim to create a defense architecture that extends from the mainland to the islands, providing both defensive and offensive capabilities.
