Greece advances National High School Diploma reforms

Discussions regarding the reform of the Greek high school system and the introduction of a National High School Diploma are entering a new phase. On October 14 and 15, 2026, the European Commission, in collaboration with the Greek Ministry of Education, Religious Affairs and Sports, will hold a specialized advisory activity in Athens.

This follows an interim report from the National Dialogue for Education released in August 2026, which outlined policy options for the high school curriculum. The proposed framework distinguishes between three functions: assessing daily learning progress, certifying high school completion, and facilitating access to higher education. The goal is to ensure that the National High School Diploma provides genuine value by certifying that graduates possess essential knowledge, modern literacies, critical thinking skills, and democratic values.
