Greece advances new mattress recycling system framework
Greece is entering the final stages of establishing an organized mattress recycling system. Following years of delay, a proposal defining the terms and conditions for the new framework is expected to be reviewed by the Board of Directors of the Hellenic Recycling Organization (EOAN) within the next two weeks.
If approved, the proposal will move to the Ministry of Environment and Energy for final institutional approval. This will lead to the creation of an Alternative Management System responsible for the collection, transport, and processing of old mattresses.
Seven major industry players, representing approximately 70% of mattress sales in Greece—including Media Strom, Elite Strom, Candia Strom, House Market/IKEA, Jysk, GrecoStrom, and Istikbal-Portokalidis Group—co-funded an operational plan in 2023. Developed with technical consultant Redeplan, the plan aims to resolve long-standing issues regarding mattress disposal and street abandonment.
