Greece advances selection for next-generation submarine fleet

The Hellenic Navy has reached a critical stage in selecting its next generation of submarines. The Naval Staff and relevant directorates have completed the first operational evaluation of proposals submitted by manufacturers, moving the procurement process from theoretical discussion to active operational choice.

The decision is viewed as a long-term strategic move that will define the structure and capabilities of the Greek submarine fleet for the next 30 to 40 years. While the four Type 214 'Papanikolis' class submarines currently serve as a core operational advantage due to their low acoustic signature, older units are approaching the end of their operational lives.

Time pressure is a significant factor, as the process from platform selection to full operational integration—including shipbuilding, testing, and crew training—can take nearly a decade. Additionally, the technological advantage previously held by Greece is being challenged as Turkey also strengthens its submarine fleet with Type 214 class vessels.
