Greece advocates for ambitious EU budget and energy investment
Greek Deputy Foreign Minister for European Affairs, Tasos Hatzivasilieus, has rejected the perceived dilemma between competitiveness and cohesion within the European Union. Regarding the negotiations for the new Multiannual Financial Framework 2028-2034, Hatzivasilieus stated that Greece advocates for an ambitious budget that avoids horizontal cuts and increases resources for citizens.
On energy policy, the Minister highlighted the approval of an energy escape clause for Greece, which is expected to facilitate up to 1 billion euros in investments in energy networks and storage infrastructure by 2028. This move aims to reduce energy costs and bolster economic resilience.
Addressing regional security, Hatzivasilieus noted that while Ankara has returned to a rhetoric of tension, communication channels remain open and dialogue is structured. He emphasized that Greece does not threaten others but will not allow itself to be threatened. Additionally, he characterized the visit of U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio to Athens as a ‘geopolitical vote of confidence,’ confirming aligned interests in defense, energy, and trade.
