Greece affirms military readiness amid Aegean tensions

Greek Foreign Minister Giorgos Gerapetritis has issued a firm message regarding the protection of national sovereignty and key infrastructure projects, such as the Great Sea Interconnector (GSI). He stated that Greece maintains full operational readiness and will not hesitate to respond dynamically in the field with frigates and F-16 fighter jets if provoked.

Gerapetritis dismissed claims that Turkey has achieved diplomatic successes, noting that Ankara has not been integrated into the F-35 program or the SAFE initiative, nor has the Turkey-Libya memorandum been ratified. He emphasized that Greece has used the past three years to significantly strengthen its armed forces and upgrade trilateral alliances with the United States and Israel.

Concurrently, tensions in the Aegean and Eastern Mediterranean remain high. Recent Turkish actions include the use of unmanned aerial vehicles for airspace violations, the placement of maritime parks near Greek waters, and challenges to national energy planning. Ankara has specifically intervened regarding the Greece-Cyprus electrical interconnection, asserting that no energy planning in the region will proceed without Turkish approval.
