Greece aims to become a regional education hub through university investments
The Greek Minister of Education, Religious Affairs and Sports, Sofia Zacharaki, has announced a strategic initiative to transform Greece into a regional educational hub. During the 90th Thessaloniki International Fair, Zacharaki highlighted investments aimed at upgrading university infrastructure, enhancing student welfare, and increasing the internationalization of higher education institutions.
A key component of this strategy includes significant increases in student support. The housing allowance for students has reportedly more than doubled, rising from 41 million euros in 2019 to 90 million euros. Additionally, the Ministry is focusing on the development of regional universities, the creation of new academic departments, and the modernization of curricula to attract more international students, particularly through strengthened foreign-language programs in Northern Greece.
