Greece reports highest EU airfare increase amid aviation expansion

Greece recorded the highest annual increase in passenger airfares within the European Union in August 2026, with prices rising by 16.3% compared to the previous year, according to Eurostat data. This surge occurred during a period of high tourism activity, contrasting with the EU average, which saw a slight decrease of 0.4%.

In the aviation sector, Jet2, Transavia France, and TUI are expanding their presence in Greece for the 2027 season. These airlines are increasing capacity and extending flight periods to destinations such as Heraklion, Chania, and Kalamata to better serve British and German markets.

Attica Group reported improved financial performance for the first half of 2026. Despite a 12.8% reduction in scheduled routes, the company's turnover reached €329.8 million, a 1% increase from the previous year. EBITDA rose significantly to €15.7 million, up from €4.1 million in the same period of 2025, driven by operational efficiencies and fleet optimization that reduced fuel consumption by 11%. Net losses were also significantly narrowed to €13.5 million, compared to €52.3 million in the first half of 2025.
