Thessaly and Phthiotis to receive 123 million euros for flood protection
The Greek Ministries of National Economy and Finance and Environment and Energy have announced the Aqua Montis program, a major mountain hydrology initiative totaling approximately 123 million euros. The project aims to enhance flood and erosion protection in the Thessaly and Phthiotis regions through nature-based solutions.
Funding includes 96.1 million euros from the ESPA 2021-2027 Environment and Climate Change program, alongside 26.5 million euros from the Green Fund for projects under the Volos Forestry Directorate. The program involves the construction of approximately 1,300 structures, including weight dams, single and double dams, and pre-dams.
These works are designed to mitigate the impact of extreme weather events, such as the Daniel and Elias phenomena that struck the region in September 2023. Implementation will take place across the mountain basins of Agia, Larissa, Mouzakia, Trikala, and Lamia to prevent flooding and landslides in lowland areas.
