Greece allocates €30 million for new research Centers of Excellence

ESPA 2021-2027 Centers of Excellence robotics research nanotechnology innovation funding

Nikos Papathanasis, Deputy Minister of National Economy and Finance, has approved funding for two new Centers of Excellence in Greece through the ESPA 2021-2027 Competitiveness Program. The total approved budget is €30 million, with €15 million allocated to each project. The funding is provided by the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) and national contributions.

The first project, HERON, aims to establish Greece’s first Center of Excellence in Robotics. Coordinated by the National Technical University of Athens (NTUA) with support from the Italian Institute of Technology (IIT) and the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT), HERON will focus on robotics for safety and rescue, field robotics (agriculture, maritime, logistics, space), and healthcare/social robotics. It will also include modern laboratory infrastructure and a Makerspace.

The second project, COPE-Nano, focuses on creating a Center of Excellence in Organic, Printed Electronics (FPEs) and Nanotechnologies, leveraging established laboratory expertise to foster sustainable research and innovation.
