Greece allocates €8.17 million for University of Patras student housing

The Greek Ministry of Education, Religious Affairs and Sports has announced €8,175,000 in funding to provide housing allowances for 3,948 students at the University of Patras. This funding, allocated from the 2026 budget, represents a 188% increase compared to the €2,837,000 provided in 2019.

The measure follows concerns regarding high rental costs and living expenses preventing students from enrolling in higher education. At the University of Patras, approximately 400 successful applicants failed to enroll this year due to these economic pressures. Similar trends are observed at the University of Ioannina, where roughly 190 first-year students—about 5.5% of successful applicants—did not register for the 2026-2027 academic year, even in high-demand departments such as Medicine.

The government stated that this initiative aims to ensure that the cost of living does not become a barrier to accessing, staying in, or completing higher education studies.
