Greece condemns Turkish marine park declarations in Aegean and Mediterranean
Tensions between Greece and Turkey have escalated following Ankara's announcement of two new national marine parks in the northeastern Aegean and the Eastern Mediterranean. The Greek Ministry of Foreign Affairs has rejected these decisions, asserting that the designated areas extend beyond Turkish territorial waters and into the high seas or Greek continental shelf, making the unilateral move illegal.
Greek Foreign Minister Giorgos Gerapetritis issued a high-toned response, stating that Greece is prepared to defend its sovereign rights by any means necessary. He emphasized that the era of passive diplomacy has ended and that Athens remains ready for any scenario while maintaining open communication channels. Gerapetritis also noted that previous efforts toward calm waters had served national interests by reducing airspace violations and migration pressures, allowing for economic and military strengthening.
In response to the developments, Greece plans to file an official objection with the United Nations, providing maps and coordinates to contest Turkish jurisdiction. The Greek government intends to elevate the issue to European levels to ensure it is not treated solely as a bilateral dispute.
