Greece and Cyprus discuss regional stability and energy cooperation

In Athens, Anita Demetriou, President of the Democratic Rally, held high-level meetings with Greek officials, including Foreign Minister Giorgos Geropetritis, Minister of Environment and Energy Stavros Papastavrou, and Deputy Foreign Minister Tasos Chatzivasileiou. The discussions focused on strengthening cooperation between Cyprus and Greece regarding the Cyprus issue and addressing instability in the Eastern Mediterranean, specifically citing illegal actions by Turkey and Libya.

Demetriou highlighted the need for a unified strategy to counter Turkish intransigence and discussed the illegal Turkey-Libya memorandum. She also emphasized the strategic importance of the Greece-Cyprus Interconnection (GSI) project and the acceleration of renewable energy development to enhance regional energy security.

Separately, former Greek Prime Minister Antonis Samaras issued a sharp critique of current Greek foreign policy in an article for Estia. Samaras called for the dismissal of Foreign Minister Giorgos Geropetritis, labeling recent developments in Libya a “failure in geopolitical analysis” and “failure in prediction.” He criticized the current administration’s approach to Turkey, arguing that the policy of “calm waters” leads to a de facto acceptance of Turkish interests.
