Greece food insecurity rises to 7.5% of population in 2025
Data from the Hellenic Statistical Authority (ELSTAT) indicates that 7.5% of the Greek population experienced moderate or severe food insecurity in 2025. This represents an increase from 7% recorded in 2024.
Severe food insecurity reached 1.7% of the population, the highest level recorded since ELSTAT began using the Food Insecurity Experience Scale (FIES) in 2019. This metric identifies households where at least one member went an entire day without food due to a lack of financial resources or other means.
In comparison to European averages for the 2023-2025 period, Greece's moderate or severe food insecurity rate of 7.1% is slightly lower than the European average of 7.4%. However, its severe food insecurity rate of 1.6% is also lower than the European average of 1.9%.
Economic pressures are also reflected in household spending. In 2025, food, housing, and transport accounted for 48.7% of the average monthly expenditure of Greek households, up from 48.4% in 2024. The burden is significantly higher for low-income households, who spend 60.8% of their monthly budget on these three categories.
