Greece and Eastern Libya deepen ties on EEZ, migration and energy

Greek foreign minister Georgios Gerapetritis met Eastern Libyan army chief Saddam Haftar in Athens, confirming a boost in bilateral cooperation. The two officials discussed delimiting an Exclusive Economic Zone between Greece and Libya under the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea, and pledged to work together to curb irregular migration flows to Crete and Gavdos.

The talks also covered training Libyan Coast Guard personnel in Greece, the launch of new educational programmes, and the expansion of air and sea links. Energy investment opportunities were highlighted, with both sides exploring joint projects. Greece positioned itself as a reliable partner in the European Union and the UN Security Council, reaffirming support for a unified Libya free of external interference. The meetings aimed to strengthen stability and prosperity across the Eastern Mediterranean region.
