Saint Catherine's Monastery reaches historic agreement with Egypt

The Holy Monastery of Saint Catherine at Mount Sinai and the Egyptian state have reached a legally binding agreement to secure the monastery's religious character and monastic way of life. This settlement addresses a 1,500-year-old institutional uncertainty regarding the monastery's legal status and ensures the exclusive use of worship spaces by the brotherhood, with guarantees from the Egyptian government.

Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis described the development as a ‘historic breakthrough,’ noting that the Greek government supported the effort with discretion and persistence. The agreement has received formal support from the Ecumenical Patriarchate, the Patriarchates of Alexandria and Jerusalem, and the Churches of Cyprus and Greece. Archbishop Symeon of Sinai expressed his intention to sign the agreement in the near future, pending his health status.

Political reactions have been mixed. While the government views the deal as a sign of strengthening strategic ties with Cairo, opposition leaders, including SYRIZA's Rena Dourou, have questioned the terms, calling for the full text to be made public and raising concerns about whether the agreement preserves historical property rights or merely grants usage rights. Additionally, the Prime Minister linked this diplomatic success to the resumption of negotiations between Greece and Egypt regarding the delimitation of their Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ).
